My work:
I started Gretchen Scoble Design 15 years ago, my studio is located on Bainbridge Island in Washington, up on a hill overlooking lots and lots of evergreens, fruit trees, flowers, a big lawn and the sparkling Puget Sound. I feel very fortunate to do work I love in such a beautiful place.
My work is clean, clear and sophisticated, embodying a deep-rooted love of typography-a passion that drew me into the world of graphic design in the first place. It was this obsession with the beauty of the typographic form that progressed into my focus on book design.
In my 20 years of experience designing books, corporate identity, letterhead systems, annual reports, brochures, advertisements and other marketing materials, I have worked with a wide range of companies from large to small. I focus on working in a deeply collaborative environment as I believe the most innovative design solutions come from this method. True to this approach, one of the most important aspects of my work is hearing the needs of my clients and keeping those priorities first and foremost in my design process.
My bio:
I studied design at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. While still in school my first design job was at The Understanding Business re-designing all the phone books for the state of California. This introduced me to large-scale design projects and management.
After finishing my studies I worked at Group C, a small studio that designed architectural monographs for Rizzoli along with a lot of other logos, annual reports, brochures etc. But, it was the books that really sparked my creativity. I loved the large scope of the projects, keeping all the details in check, and the endless tweaking of the typography.
In San Francisco I worked as Senior Designer and Art Director at Chronicle Books. It was still a youngish publishing house and a very exciting time to be in book design. I was constantly pushing the envelope, trying to expand the accepted views of book design. The array of direct collaborations with writers, illustrators and photographers was a very rewarding aspect of my tenure there.
When I relocated to the Northwest I worked in Nordstrom's design department. But soon thereafter I decided I wanted to give independence a try and I established Gretchen Scoble Design. This was 15 years ago now and I haven't looked back.
